According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association there are almost 57 million active Fantasy Sports players in North America in 2015. That is 15 million more than in 2014.
About 60% play pay-to-play games and spend an average of $162-$257 a year on games from NFL, ESPN, Yahoo, FanDuel, DraftKings, etc.
Daily Fantasy Sports (e.g., FanDuel and DraftKings) - the most recent innovation in the field - offers competitions with shorter duration but essentially the same game play as traditional providers: players compose a lineup with athletes from various teams and points are based on the performance of the selected athletes in real world games (e.g., the NFL).
The problem
Despite strong success Fantasy Sports - both traditional and daily - suffers from three weeknesses:
Extreme skill required
A recent study suggests that in Daily Fantasy Sports 91% of the profits are won by just 1.3% of the participants. Frequent winners are "pros" who enter 100s of tournaments and use a combination of automation and many hours of study to select their lineups.
Casual play not rewarded
As a consequence the casual player is not rewarded in any way. Not only is he unlikely to win any prizes, he is also quickly relegated to the lower places in the leaderboard without any chance of climbing back to the top.
Very little sport in Fantasy Sports
Ultimately, Fantasy Sports is more about "sports nerdiness" or outright sports betting than about sports fandom. It also explains why "only" about 1/4 of the total NFL fan base participate in Fantasy Sports.
The solution
At Antesy we are re-inventing Fantasy Sports for real fans and creating a game that is actually fun to play.
In early 2016 we will launch FANCRUSH - a game that combines the competitive elements from Fantasy Sports with classic gamification to appeal to all sports fans. Not just the nerds.
FANCRUSH is a game for sports fans built on four premises:
